In 2003 there was a spam act enacted which was called the CAN-SPAM Act. The purpose of this act that was established by Congress was to eliminate unsolicited email. Even with this law in place, spam has not been eliminated. In fact, more than 40% of all email that is sent today should actually be illegal according to this law. Nevertheless, this unsolicited email still exists in abundance.
The reason why these people are still able to send this unsolicited email is because they make so much money that they are able to invest in sophisticated technology that they can then use to outsmart The Federal Trade Commission. For this reason it is next to impossible to enforce this law. However, the few people that do get caught sending spam pay a huge price.
Thankfully there are 4 ways in which you yourself can fight spam. 1. The first thing you need to do is protect your email address by not displaying it in newsgroup postings, chat rooms or anywhere else online as this is how your email will get harvested to be used for sending unsolicited email. 2. Secondly, you will want to create 2 email addresses: 1 for personal messages and 1 for public use. 3. Third, it is important to take the time to create a unique email address because the people who send spam will oftentimes try sending email to accounts such as johnsmith or thewilliams. On the other hand, if you have a unique name such as 37xi6OWt8 you will not get nearly as much junk mail. 4. Fourth and finally, use your email account's tools to filter out spam or channel it into a bulk email folder.
These methods seem obvious, which is why they are so often overlooked. They will help you get rid of a lot of spam when you do use them though.
