In order to help aid in the fight against viruses and other malware, a lot of security advisory organizations and developers have worked together to compose a list of virus. Unfortunately, not everyone is working together on this and thus there is not a single comprehensive list of virus available right now.
One of the reasons why it is so difficult to put together a list of virus is that each of these viruses has to be named. So, whenever a new virus appears everyone rushes around trying to identify and understand what this virus is so that they can develop appropriate counter-measures to stop it from spreading. Somewhere along the way the virus also has to be named. Since those developers who create anti-virus software are in competition on just how fast they can react to the new threat, these viruses are usually named independently. Then once a list of virus makes its way around the name has been in existence long enough that it has stuck and thus cannot be changed.
Another reason why this list of virus names is ambiguous is because a virus may initially be identified as a completely new virus when it is actually a variation of an earlier known virus. In such cases, the virus is usually renamed. For instance, the Sobig worm has a second variation that was initially called Palyh. Later on, when it was realized that it was simply another variation of the Sobig worm, it was renamed Sobig.b. However, if this does not occur fast enough, the old name may still stick.
Today there are actually 2 list of virus. One is a list of "in-the-wild" viruses. This list names viruses that are being actively circulated. Then there is the “zoo virus” list. This list of virus contains those viruses that are no longer actively circulating.
